BRAMPTON, Ontario (July 23, 2024) – Canon Canada Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce that it has partnered with Bullfrog Power to choose green electricity for half of its Brampton head office consumption. Through this partnership with Bullfrog Power, Canon Canada is reducing its carbon footprint and supporting an innovative approach to growing the renewable energy industry in Canada. In the first half of 2024 alone, Canon Canada has displaced over 68 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions – the equivalent of diverting 24 tonnes of waste from landfill, and the same amount of emissions absorbed from 33 hectares of forest growing each year.
“Canon Canada is proud to be supporting clean, renewable energy with Bullfrog Power,” says Leena Nagpal, Vice-President, People and Operations, Canon Canada. “Environmental awareness and action are built into the company’s corporate philosophy, Kyosei: all people – regardless of race, religion or culture – harmoniously living and working together into the future. By choosing Bullfrog Power’s renewable energy for half of our head office’s energy consumption, Canon Canada is demonstrating its commitment to supporting a cleaner future for all Canadians.”
Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power’s generators put 100 per cent clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match 50 per cent of the amount of conventional power that Canon Canada uses at its head office. Across Canada, Bullfrog’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind, solar and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.
“We’re excited to welcome Canon Canada to the bullfrogpowered community,” says Suha Jethalal, President of Bullfrog Power. “By choosing green electricity, Canon Canada is helping to reduce our dependence on polluting forms of energy and transition our energy systems to renewable sources.”
In addition to choosing green energy with Bullfrog Power, Canon Canada’s sustainability initiatives include:
- A LEED® Gold certified headquarters that includes energy-efficient lighting throughout the building; a rooftop greywater system that saves Canon Canada approximately 20 per cent of its annual domestic city water usage each year; a sophisticated kitchen digestion system that helps divert and reduce organic waste from landfills; dedicated carpool and bike-parking spots to encourage more efficient and eco-friendly commuting; and 13 electric vehicle charging stations and 21 reserved spaces for lower emission vehicles to incentivize employees to practice a more sustainable lifestyle.
- A partnership with Earth Rangers, a kids’ environmental and conservation organization committed to environmental education and responsibility in Canadian youth. Canon Canada sponsored 42 Earth Rangers assemblies for the 2023-2024 school year, which bring environmental awareness – either in-person or virtually – to thousands of elementary school students across the country.
- Branch Out, a volunteer initiative that gives employees the opportunity to create green spaces and sustainable environments around the communities where they work and live. Since the program began in 2014, employees have planted 36,950 trees, shrubs and perennials, removed 18,700 square metres of invasive species and restored more than 4,300 square metres of land.
- Eliminating the sale of single-use plastic water bottles and the use of plastic straws at all Canon Canada locations across the country.
- Electronics recycling programs that encourage employees to responsibly recycle their no-longer-needed electronics. In the past 10 years, Canon Canada employees have diverted more than 6,500 kilograms of consumer electronics, clothing and textiles from landfills. Dedicated drop-off bins for used batteries, toner cartridges and electronics are set up at multiple locations across the country.
- Participation in multiple electronics stewardship programs across the country, including Circular Materials, Éco Enterprises Québec and Electronics Products Stewardship Canada.
