On April 24, Canon Canada hosted its third annual Environmental Education Day in celebration of Earth Day. The event focused on developing environmental literacy and encouraging students to be positive environmental stewards within their community.
Fifty-one grade 4 and 5 students from a local school walked to Canon’s Brampton, Ont., headquarters in honour of the day’s theme. Nobuhiko Kitajima, President & CEO of Canon Canada, welcomed them upon their arrival. Mr. Kitajima spoke to the group about Canon’s corporate philosophy—Kyosei—and its commitment to environmental sustainability. He also noted that every individual plays an important role in protecting the earth for future generations.
The students started their day by being introduced to live animals, including a bald eagle, kestrel, skunk, caiman lizard and curl-crested aracari toucan. The animal ambassadors from Earth Rangers educated the students on the animals’ behaviours, diets and habitats, stressing the importance of protecting their habitats to ensure the survival of the species.
Following the animal demonstration, the students split off into groups to participate in three workshops run by Canon Canada’s Environmental Team and Credit Valley Conservation. On a tour of the headquarters facility, students learned about its sustainability features including the water- and energy-conservation initiatives and waste diversion initiatives.
On an outdoor nature walk, the students learned more about the natural environment that exists in their own backyard and the basics of plant and animal identification.
In the third workshop, students got crafty and turned old milk cartons collected in the building into beautiful bird feeders to take home.
