The Canon Canada Branch Out Program is a volunteer environmental initiative that provides employees the opportunity to give back to the community they work in.
Rain or shine, Branch Out takes place near Canon Canada offices across the country during the summer. Branch Out started as a tree planting program, but since then activities have expanded to include more sustainable initiatives.
Branch Out took root in 2014. The program speaks to Canon Canada’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei – “living and working together for the common good.”
We have partnered with environmental groups across Canada to take part in a variety of activities. Since 2014, employees have rescued fish in Calgary, restored parks in Ottawa, built rain garden in Brampton, Ont., created and tossed wildflower seed balls in Mississauga, Ont., and planted trees in Quebec City, among other environmental actions.
Removing fish from a river that has culverts, measuring them and setting them back in the river so they are rerouted around the diversion.
Digging up old pathways and laying down new, environmentally friendly gravel.
Building bee houses to take home or give back to the community.
Clearing land of invasive species and improving the conditions for the turtle population.
Taking a template, painting a fish on the cities’ storm sewers – a friendly reminder that only rainwater is meant to go down them – and going door to door with information kits.

Employees also continue to get their hands dirty planting trees and shrubs and helping with invasive species removal, stream bank restoration and pond maintenance.

The funds come from the company’s Clean Earth Campaign. Toner cartridges returned by consumers are sent to a recycling facility in the U.S.; the materials are resold as parts, with proceeds going to the Clean Earth Campaign.
