Can I use the Windows 2000 driver included on the driver CD-ROM that I received with my scanner?
The Windows 2000 driver you received with your scanner has some limitations that are corrected with the updated Windows XP/2000 driver. Canon recommends that you use the newest Windows XP/2000 driver if available or download the newest Windows 2000 driver. Using the newest downloadable Windows 2000 driver, you will see the following warning/limitations.
- During driver installation, a dialog box stating that 'Hardware Installation - The software you are installing for this hardware - Scanner - has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP' will appear for the FB12000S, FB620U, FB630U/Ui, CS300 and CS600. Select Continue Anyway.
- Unable to preview or scan after switching users with Windows XP's "Switch User " feature.
How do I install the Canon "Windows XP/2000" scanner drivers for my new Windows XP computer?
Canon developed "Windows XP/2000" scanner drivers for certain models (refer to compatibility chart). Follow the instructions below.
Scanner - Windows XP/2000 driver Installation:
- Power ON your computer and log on as Administrator.
- Download your "Windows XP Driver" from the Canon Website to your computer desktop or wherever you save downloaded files.
- Double-click
the downloaded file. Files extract to C:\temp\xxxx (xxxx = the folder created from the download).
- At the 'Canon - Information: All items were successfully extracted' dialog, select OK. (Installation instructions will launch.)
- Follow the installation instructions.
Oops! I upgraded to Microsoft XP before I removed my scanner drivers
Please follow the instructions below to update your system to the Windows XP/2000 drivers. These instructions are for the new Windows XP start menu not the Classic start menu.
I upgraded my computer from Windows 98/Me to Windows XP before I removed my scanner drivers and ScanGear Toolbox utility. How do I install the new updated driver and ScanGear Toolbox?
To update from Windows 98/Me driver to the Windows XP/2000 driver, follow these instructions to first remove then reinstall the new scanner driver and ScanGear Toolbox.
Scanner - Windows 98/Me Upgrade to Windows XP Home
- Power ON your computer and log on as Administrator.
- Select the Start button, then right-click My Computer, select Properties. (Note: 'System Properties' window opens.)
- Select the Hardware tab then the Device Manager button.
- Under 'Other devices', right-click the ? CanoScan icon and select Uninstall.
- If you see the 'Confirm Device Removal: Warning: You are about to uninstall this device from your system' prompt, select OK. (Note: The 'other devices' and the "? CanoScan" icons are removed in Device Manager.)
- Close
the 'Device Manager' and 'System Properties' windows.
- Uninstall 'Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X' (XX= version number) by selecting Start, then Control Panel and selecting Add or Remove Programs.
- In the 'Add or Remove Programs' dialog, select Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X, then select Change/Remove.
- At the 'Confirm File Deletion - Are you sure you want to completely remove Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X and all of its components?' dialog, select Yes.
- At the 'Remove Programs From Your Computer - unInstallShield will remove the software Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X from your computer. Please wait while each of the following components is removed ... Uninstall successfully completed', select OK.
- Close
the 'Add or Remove Programs' and 'Control Panel' windows.
- Disconnect
your USB cable from your scanner.
- Download
your Windows XP/2000 Driver and Canon ScanGear Toolbox program from the Canon Website to your computer desktop or wherever you save downloaded files.
- Double-click
the downloaded Windows XP/2000 driver file. Files extract to C:\temp\xxxx (xxxx = the folder created from the download)
- At the 'Canon - Information: All items were successfully extracted' dialog, select OK. Installation instructions will launch.
- Follow the installation instructions.
- To install the Canon ScanGear Toolbox double-click the downloaded file 'Toolbox v(xxxx).exe' (xxxx = the version of the program) from where you saved the downloaded files.
- At the 'Canon - Information: All items were successfully extracted' dialog, Select OK.
- At the 'Canon ScanGear Toolbox - Welcome' dialog, select Next.
- At the 'Choose Destination Location' dialog, select Next.
- At the 'Select Program Folder' dialog, select Next.
- At the 'Setup Complete' dialog, Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now, select Finish.
I upgraded my computer from Windows NT 4.0/2000 to Windows XP before I removed my scanner drivers and ScanGear Toolbox. How do I install the new updated driver and ScanGear Toolbox?
To update from Windows NT 4.0/2000 driver to the Windows XP/2000 driver, follow these instructions to first remove then reinstall the new driver and ScanGear Toolbox. Canon has developed a program that will purge your system of the installed scanner driver. You can download the program by selecting "Deldrv" below. Remember to save it to a known folder to later execute it. Deldrv supports the following CanoScan scanners, N650U, N656U, N1220U, N670U, N676U, N1240U, D646U, D660U, D1230UF, D2400UF, FB 630U, FB 620U, FB 1200S, CS300 and CS600.

Scanner - Windows NT 4.0/2000 Upgrade to Windows XP Professional
- Power ON your computer and log on as Administrator.
- Download 'Deldrv.exe' from the Canon Website to your computer desktop or wherever you save downloaded files.
- Double-click
Deldrv.exe.
- At the 'Select Device' dialog, unplug the USB cable from the scanner then select your scanner, select OK.
- At the 'Confirm Driver Uninstallation: Are you sure you want to uninstall the following scanner driver?' prompt, select OK.
- At the 'CanoScan - Uninstalling scanner driver completes' dialog, select OK.
- Uninstall 'Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X' (XX= version number) by selecting Start, then Control Panel and selecting Add or Remove Programs.
- In the 'Add or Remove Programs' dialog, select Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X, then select Change/Remove.
- At the 'Confirm File Deletion - Are you sure you want to completely remove Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X and all of its components?' dialog, select Yes.

How do I get the scanner buttons to work, now that I installed the scanner driver on Windows XP?
Follow this procedure to adjust your scanner driver settings.
- Select the Start Button, then select Control Panel.
- Select Printers and Other Hardware.
- Select Scanners and Cameras.
- Double-click
your Scanner. (Properties dialog opens)
- Select the Events tab.
For Scanners with only 1 button ...
- Under 'Scanner events', select the drop-down menu and then select Canon Scanner Push Button.
- In the box below, select the application you wish to associate with this button. Canon recommends choosing Canon ScanGear Toolbox. Then uncheck all other applications.
- Select the Apply button.
For Scanners with 2 (Start and Film Scan) buttons ...
- Under 'Scanner events', select the drop-down menu and then select Canon Scanner Push Button.
- In the box below, select the application you wish to associate with this button. Canon recommends choosing Canon ScanGear Toolbox. Then uncheck all other applications.
- Select the Apply button.
- Perform the same for the Canon Film Scan Push Button if it is available in the drop-down menu. Canon recommends choosing Canon ScanGear Toolbox FAU. Then uncheck all other applications
- Select the Apply button.
For Scanners with 3 (COPY, EMAIL and SCAN) buttons ...
- Under 'Scanner events', select the drop-down menu and then select CanoScan COPY Button.
- In the box below, select the application you wish to associate with this button. Canon recommends choosing Canon ScanGear Toolbox. Then uncheck all other applications.
- Select the Apply button.
- Perform the same for the CanoScan EMAIL Button if it is available in the drop-down menu. Canon recommends choosing Canon ScanGear Toolbox. Then uncheck all other applications.
- Select the Apply button.
- Perform the same for the CanoScan SCAN Button if it is available in the drop-down menu. Canon recommends choosing Canon ScanGear Toolbox. Then uncheck all other applications.
- Select the Apply button.
- In the 'CanoScan Properties' dialog, select OK.
The save button on the ScanGear Toolbox does not work now that I upgraded from Windows 98/ME to Windows XP. How do I correct this issue?
Follow this procedure to adjust your ScanGear Toolbox setting.
- Select Settings in ScanGear Toolbox.
- Select the Save tab.
- Select the Browse button and select the folder where you want to save your files.
