BJC-85 Offers Millennium-Ready Portable Color Printing in a Three-Pound Package

MISSISSAUGA, ON. (January 17, 2000) – Kicking off the new Millennium with its continued commitment to small office/home office (SOHO) end-users, Canon Canada Inc. (CCI) announced a new Color Bubble Jet printer which is a value-performance winner for both Mac and Windows environments. The only dual-platform portable printer on the market, the BJC-85 printer offers faster black print speed, faster wireless data transfer via infrared data (IrDA) and support for Canon’s Photo Inks. It also features Canon’s unique Drop Modulation Technology for the most photo-realistic output in its class as well as USB connectivity for easy set-up. In addition, the BJC-85 is compatible with Canon’s exclusive IS-12 Color Image Scanner Cartridge, which instantly turns the printer into a colour sheetfed scanner—an innovation that no other company can match.

“Canon is the only manufacturer in our industry to offer both Mac and Windows users a full line of colour printers, scanners and MFPs,” says Stan Skorayko, vice president and general manager, Information Systems Products Group. “Canon’s expertise with colour, design, photography, and the Internet make Canon the ideal choice to bring Mac customers an entire line of high quality, strong value products that enhance their creative efforts.”

The BJC-85 Color Bubble Jet Printer

The BJC-85 printer, which replaces Canon’s award-winning BJC-80 printer, offers 720 x 360 dots per inch (dpi) resolution and fast, five pages per minute (ppm) print speeds in monochrome printing and two ppm in colour printing. Sleek, compact and with a new, tinted blue lid design to coordinate with Apple’s most popular iBook design, this portable printer weighs just 1.4 kg and measures 300mm wide by 158 mm deep by 57mm high.

The BJC-85 printer is one of the few portable printers on the market equipped with an automatic sheet feeder that handles up to 30 sheets of paper. AC-powered, the printer also supports an optional NiMH battery pack (MSRP $130* CDN) that can print up to 200 pages on a single charge.

The BJC-85 also has the new BC-12e Photo Cartridge (optional) to provide photo quality printing. Print quality is optimized by Canon’s exclusive Drop Modulation Technology that allows the new printhead to create both regular and half-size ink drops in the same scan line. This provides greater tonal expression and a smoother transition between colours for enhanced photo output.

To further enhance its mobility, the BJC-85 printer employs the latest version of IrDA technology (version 1.1) which allows for cableless printing and scanning at speeds of four megabytes per second. By using the built-in IrDA port, travelers are free to leave their printer cables behind. When cableless printing is not necessary, ease of use is enhanced by having the option of either parallel or USB connection to your computer.

The BJC-85 printer ships with drivers for Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows CE, iMac, Power G3/G4 and the iBook.

The BJC-85 printer will ship in January at an estimated street price of $399*. The IS-12 Color Image Scanner Kit ships with a TWAIN compliant driver and Canon’s IS Scan software and the kit is available for an MSRP of $186* CDN.

“Canon’s superior printing technology and leadership has allowed us to start the new Millennium with an outstanding new product in the portable colour printer market,” added Stan Skorayko. “With the new, dual-platform BJC-85, we embrace the newest arrival to the mobile workforce—the Apple iBook user. The BJC-85 is the ideal solution for the mobile executive; with the BJC-85 and scanner cartridge, mobile users have a lightweight, fully equipped office in their briefcase that allows them to colour print, colour scan or colour copy from the road.”
